The Short Version

  • ARAM Mayhem is ARAM plus augments: at set points you pick 1 of 3 power-up cards in Silver, Gold, and Prismatic tiers. Augments replace runes entirely.
  • The right pick depends on your champion. Global "best augment" lists mislead; an augment that is S-tier on one champion is a trap on another.
  • The champion meta is its own animal. Mayhem tier lists differ sharply from regular ARAM and shift every patch.
  • Hexgate now supports ARAM Mayhem: live S–D tier badges on the augment cards as they are offered (rerolls included), a champion tier list in champ select, and the adaptive item overlay in game. Free download.

What Is ARAM Mayhem?

ARAM Mayhem is League's chaos-tuned take on the Howling Abyss: the ARAM you know, plus augments, the permanent power-ups popularized by Arena and Swarm. Runes are gone; instead, everyone gets augment offers as the game progresses, and by the late game every champion on the map is running a build that would be illegal anywhere else. Damage is up, cooldowns are down, and games swing hard on who drafted their augments better.

The mode has quickly become the main queue for a huge slice of the playerbase, and for good reason: it is ARAM's fast pace with an extra decision layer stacked on top. That decision layer is exactly where games are won.

How Augment Offers Work

At set points in the match, three face-down cards flip open in the middle of your screen. Each card is one augment:

  • Three tiers. Offers come in Silver, Gold, and Prismatic flavors, in roughly ascending power. The card frames are color-coded to match.
  • Categories. Cards are tagged Damage, Utility, Speed, Economy, Resilience, or General, and some are Quest augments that upgrade after you complete an objective ("Snipe 15 enemy champions with abilities").
  • Individual rerolls. Each card has its own reroll button below it, with a shared, limited reroll pool. Rerolling one card leaves the other two untouched.
  • Ability augments. Some augments replace or rework one of your abilities or summoner spells (Spin Me Right Round swaps a summoner spell for a grappling hook, for example), which is where the truly cursed Mayhem builds come from.

You have a few seconds, three options, up to a few rerolls, and no take-backs. That is the whole skill test.

What Augments Should You Pick?

The honest answer that most "top 10 augments" lists skip: there is no global best pick. Augment value is a function of the champion you are playing, and the spread is enormous. A few examples from the current pool:

  • Marksmage (attacks deal bonus damage from AP) is a monster on AP auto-attackers and hybrid scalers, and close to a blank card on a poke mage who rarely autos.
  • Tooth Fairy (enemies drop teeth that grant permanent Lethality and Magic Pen) rewards champions who can safely walk to the drops; on an immobile backliner the teeth mostly decorate the floor.
  • Typhoon and other on-hit missile effects want attack speed stackers, while Recursion's flat Ability Haste belongs on spell-spammers.
  • Overflow doubles your mana costs to empower heals, shields, and damage from max mana; that trade is fantastic on mana-stacked enchanters and suicide on lean-mana assassins.
  • Homeguard-style movement augments and Escape Plan are underrated on champions who need to reposition constantly, and overrated on everything else.

Reliable rules of thumb, in priority order:

  1. Scale your primary damage pattern. Auto-attacker? Attack speed, on-hit, crit. Spell-caster? Haste, AP, mana. Frontliner? Durability plus engage. The tag on the card (Damage/Utility/Speed) is a hint, not a verdict.
  2. Prismatic beats tier discipline. When a Prismatic-tier effect fits your champion even loosely, it usually outperforms a perfectly-fitting Silver one. Transmute: Prismatic (gamble a pick for a random Prismatic augment) is exactly as good as your tolerance for variance.
  3. Quest augments are early-game bets. Their upgraded forms are strong, but only if you can realistically finish the quest at your champion's range and role.
  4. Reroll with a target in mind. Do not reroll a decent fit hoping for perfection; reroll cards that do nothing for your kit.
The problem with memorizing tier lists

The augment pool is 200+ entries, the rankings shift every patch, and they differ per champion. Nobody alt-tabs to a tier list website with a reroll timer running. This is precisely the decision the next section automates.

Hexgate Ranks Every Augment Card, Live, On Screen

Hexgate's overlay now fully supports ARAM Mayhem. The moment the three cards appear, Hexgate reads them and pins an S / A / B / C / D tier badge under each card, ranked for the champion you are playing, not a global average. Reroll a card and the badge updates with it; pick one and the badges get out of your way.

A few things worth knowing about how it works:

  • It sees what you see. Riot's APIs do not expose which augments you are offered, so Hexgate reads the cards from your screen on your machine, using Windows' built-in text recognition. Nothing touches the game itself: no injection, no memory reading.
  • It is champion-aware. The rankings come from per-champion augment data refreshed for every patch, cached locally so a full match costs at most one lightweight fetch.
  • It scales anywhere. 1080p to 4K, ultrawide included, on whichever monitor the game is on.
  • It only runs in Mayhem. The scanner arms itself when you load into a KIWI-queue game and shuts off everywhere else.

The ARAM Mayhem Champion Tier List Lives in Champ Select

Augments amplify champions unevenly, so the Mayhem champion meta is its own animal, distinct from regular ARAM: durable brawlers and stacking scalers that augments supercharge sit far above where they land on the normal ARAM lists, and placements reshuffle every patch as augments get balanced.

That is why a static tier list on a webpage ages badly by design. Hexgate takes the current per-patch rankings and shows them inside champion select, next to your champion, the two alternatives Mayhem offers you, and everything on the bench, so the swap decision is made where it happens, with data that is never a patch behind.

Items Still Decide Fights

Augments get the spotlight, but Mayhem games are still won and lost on itemization, and the mode's chaos makes adaptive building matter more, not less: enemy compositions get warped by their augments too. Hexgate's in-game overlay keeps recommending items against the actual enemy team as the game develops, the same engine covered in our counter-building guide. FAQ

What are ARAM Mayhem augments?

Power-ups offered during a Mayhem game on the Howling Abyss: 1-of-3 card choices in Silver, Gold, and Prismatic tiers granting permanent effects, from stat boosts to reworked abilities. They replace runes for the mode, and each card can be individually rerolled from a limited pool.

What augments should I pick in ARAM Mayhem?

Pick for your champion's primary damage pattern, prefer higher-tier effects when they fit even loosely, and treat quest augments as early-game bets. Per-champion rankings beat global lists every time; Hexgate shows that ranking on the cards themselves as they are offered.

Is there an ARAM Mayhem tier list for champions?

Yes, and it shifts every patch, with placements that differ sharply from regular ARAM. Hexgate surfaces the current list inside champion select, filtered to the champions you can actually pick or swap to, so you never rely on a stale webpage snapshot.

Can an app tell me which augment to pick?

Hexgate does exactly this: it reads the three cards from your screen the moment they flip open and overlays an S–D tier badge on each, ranked for your champion. It works at any resolution, updates on rerolls, and requires zero configuration.

Is screen reading allowed? Does it touch the game?

Hexgate never modifies or reads the game process. It looks at the same pixels you do, on your own machine, and draws an overlay on top, the same category of tool as any streaming overlay. The game client is untouched.

Does the augment badge work with rerolls?

Yes. Reroll one card and its badge updates as soon as the new augment is readable; the other two badges stay put. When the selection screen closes, all badges clear automatically.
