Porofessor is one of the oldest and most widely installed League of Legends overlays. If you have ever seen a teammate call out "enemy mid is a one-trick with a 65% win rate" in champ select, there is a good chance Porofessor told them. It is the reference tool for live game scouting.
Hexgate is a much newer and much narrower tool: an in-game build advisor that scores every viable item against the specific enemy team you are facing. We built Hexgate, so read this comparison knowing we are biased. But the two apps overlap so little that the honest answer to "which one?" is genuinely "it depends on what your gameplay is missing" - and for some players, "both".
The Core Difference: Information Before the Game vs Decisions During It
Porofessor is a scouting tool. Its job happens in champ select and the loading screen. It looks up all ten players and surfaces their ranks, win rates, main champions, playstyle tags, and recent history. It answers the question: who am I playing with and against? What you do with that information is up to you.
Hexgate is a build advisor. Its job starts when minions spawn. It reads the enemy team composition from Riot's Live Client Data API and scores items on win rate data filtered by your champion, your build slot, and the damage profile, crowd control, healing, and tankiness of the five enemies in your game. It answers the question: what should I build right now?
This distinction matters because the two apps compete for different weaknesses in your gameplay. If you routinely lose lane because you did not know the enemy jungler was a Diamond smurf, scouting helps. If you routinely build the same three items into every composition, counter-building is the leak, and no amount of pre-game information fixes it.
Porofessor - The Scouting Veteran
What Porofessor Does Well
Porofessor's live game lookup is the best-known implementation of its kind. Within seconds of entering champ select, you get a full breakdown of every player in the lobby: rank, win rate, games played this season, main role, and behavioral tags built from match history. Tags like a player being on a loss streak, playing an off-role, or one-tricking a champion give you a fast read on where the pressure in the game will come from.
That information has real strategic value. Knowing the enemy top laner is autofilled changes how hard your jungler should path top. Knowing the enemy ADC is on a ten-game win streak tells you which side of the map to play through. Porofessor packages this into an overlay that appears without alt-tabbing, which is exactly where this kind of tool should live.
It also includes in-game helpers - jungle timers, ward timers, and objective reminders - and it is backed by the team behind League of Graphs, so the underlying stats have a long track record.
Where Porofessor Falls Short
The biggest structural issue is the platform: Porofessor runs on Overwolf. You need Overwolf running as a host, with Porofessor as an app inside it. That is two processes on top of League itself, and on machines with 16 GB of RAM or less, the overhead is noticeable. It is the same platform tax that Mobalytics users pay.
The free experience is ad-supported, and recent reviews describe the app as feeling increasingly dated, with more frequent error reports than in its prime. The premium subscription removes ads and adds cosmetic and convenience features, but the core scouting data is the same.
And on the build side: Porofessor is not a build tool. It can surface popular builds and runes the way most stats sites do, but the recommendations are static, aggregate, and pre-game. Nothing in Porofessor looks at the enemy team composition and tells you to build magic resist this game because three of the five enemies are AP. That entire category of decision - the one that changes most from game to game - is outside its scope.
Hexgate - The Adaptive Build Specialist
What Hexgate Does Well
Hexgate does one thing: it recommends the right items for the game you are actually in. The scoring engine starts from win rate data for your champion and build slot, then adjusts for the enemy team's physical/magic damage split, crowd control density, healing and shielding sources, tankiness, and which enemies are fed. If the enemy Katarina is 7/0, anti-burst and Grievous Wounds items move up. If the enemy team is full AD, armor moves up. Every game produces different recommendations because every game has different enemies.
Performance is the other pillar. Hexgate is a standalone Tauri application - no Overwolf, no Electron, no second platform. Memory footprint is typically under 100 MB, and there are no ads on the free tier. It also ships one-click rune import, champion select counter data (Pro), and OTP builds (Pro).
Where Hexgate Falls Short
Hexgate does not scout players. There are no rank lookups, no playstyle tags, no loss-streak warnings, no teammate profiles. Porofessor's core feature simply does not exist in Hexgate; our focus begins when the game starts.
Hexgate also skips the general-purpose helpers - no jungle timers, no ward timers, no post-game analytics. And it is currently Windows only. If you want the everything-app, Blitz or Mobalytics are closer to that; if you want scouting specifically, Porofessor still owns that lane.

The Performance Question
Porofessor itself is not a heavy app, but Overwolf is a real cost. The host platform plus the app together add a browser-engine-sized footprint alongside League, Discord, and whatever else you run. Players on older machines have been complaining about Overwolf overhead for years, and it is the single most common reason players look for Porofessor alternatives.
Hexgate's native Tauri build keeps the overlay under 100 MB of memory with negligible CPU cost. If your machine already struggles to hold stable FPS in teamfights, this difference is the practical deciding factor between the two.
Rule of thumb: if your machine has 16 GB of RAM or more and holds 144+ FPS comfortably, run whichever tools you like - the overhead will not decide games. Below that, every Overwolf-hosted app is a real cost, and lightweight standalone overlays earn their place.
Safety and Riot Compliance
Both apps operate within Riot's third-party tool policy. Porofessor reads publicly available match history and live game data; Hexgate reads the Live Client Data API that Riot provides locally during active games (https://127.0.0.1:2999/liveclientdata/). Neither modifies game files, reads game memory, or injects into the game process. Neither will get you banned.
Which One Should You Pick?
Pick Porofessor if scouting decides your games.
If you actively use lobby information - dodging bad matchups, pathing toward weak lanes, respecting smurfs - Porofessor gives you the best version of that information with minimal setup. Accept the Overwolf overhead and the ads as the price.
Pick Hexgate if your builds do not adapt.
If you honestly could not say what you would build against a triple-tank comp versus a full-squishy comp, that is a bigger leak than scouting will ever patch. Hexgate automates exactly that decision, every game, with no platform overhead and no ads.
Running both is legitimate.
The overlap between the two apps is nearly zero: one works before the game, one during it. If your machine handles the Overwolf overhead, Porofessor for scouting plus Hexgate for itemization covers both halves without redundancy.
Final Thoughts
Porofessor earned its install base by making scouting effortless, and it is still the best at that. But scouting is information, not decisions - it tells you the enemy mid is fed, not what to do about it. Itemization is where that information becomes gold efficiency, and it is the half of the problem Porofessor was never built to solve.
That is the half Hexgate solves. Try it free, play a few games against lopsided compositions, and watch what happens to the recommendations. If your builds were already adapting, you will not learn much. Most players discover they were leaving more win rate on the table than they thought.
